the other side of hope is currently open to submissions until July 31st, 2021. They are looking for fiction and poetry submission from refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants only. They will also accept non-fiction, reviews, and interview submissions by anyone as long as the subject matter sheds light on the refugee and immigrant life. This is a new magazine that publishes in print annually and online periodically.
Seattle Rep is looking for a Native Artist-in-Residence from September to June with the first season beginning in September 2021. The Native Artist-in-Residence Program is a season-long program in which one Native artist of any discipline is paid a stipend to create art, gain professional development, and build a relationship with Seattle Rep. Any person who identifies as American Indian or Alaska Native and who lives in or around King County (or on any reservation or tribal boundary in western Washington regardless of county), and can maintain a consistent connection with Seattle Rep is welcome to apply. The application deadline is August 2, 2021.
Celeste Mohammed (Fiction, June 2016) is teaching a MasterClass on “What Lies Beneath” on July 31st from 2pm-5pm. This workshop will examine the classic rule “show don’t tell” by a close reading of several texts, and is exclusively for BIPOC writers.
Submissions of a work of fiction (novel or collection of short stories) are now open for the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. The Literary Award, initiated by donors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to honor Mr. Gaines, is designed to inspire and recognize rising African-American writers of excellence as they work to achieve the literary heights for which Ernest J. Through These Realities is looking for six Somerville-based poets of color and six Somerville-based photographers of color for a public art and poetry project. Photographers will create a series of images inspired by new, prompt-guided poetry from poets based on a James Baldwin quote about the media industry. The deadline is August 15, 2021.
